Tensions are rising around Planet Fitness after a video from one of its members started making waves online. This isn’t just any controversy — it’s sparking heated debates everywhere.
At the Fairbanks, Alaska location, a woman shared a photo showing a transgender woman in the women’s locker room. She criticized the gym, claiming it was allowing “men” into a space she believed should be reserved solely for cisgender women. The image appeared to capture the transgender woman shaving at the locker room sink.
Following this, the photo’s poster posted an emotional video expressing her frustration. That video quickly went viral, igniting a heated and widespread discussion.
In response to the situation, Planet Fitness at the Fairbanks location decided to cancel the membership of the woman who took the photo, while the transgender individual pictured was allowed to continue using the facility.
The company stood firm on its policy, stating that members are permitted to use the locker room that corresponds with their gender identity. That said, Planet Fitness emphasized that any behavior deemed to be in bad faith could result in membership termination.
Since then, additional photos of the same transgender woman using the locker room have surfaced online. This has fueled calls from conservative groups encouraging people across the country to cancel their Planet Fitness memberships.
The controversy made waves — Planet Fitness’s stock price took a sharp downturn, dropping from around $66 to nearly $56 in just under two weeks.
This steep decline also caused a significant drop in the company’s overall market value. In just five days, Planet Fitness saw its market capitalization shrink by roughly $400 million, falling from about $5.3 billion down to near $4.9 billion.
