In an exclusive interview for “People”, Jada Pinkett Smith revealed for the first time that she had been separated from Will Smith for 6 years, until the moment of the famous slap at the Oscars. Thus, the actress shared some details about her personal life, while of course she also focused on her long-term marriage with Will, which seems to have had a lot of difficulties in recent years.
While not sharing details on why they took the spot, Jada said they decided to split in 2016 after they were “tired of trying” to make it work.
“I think we both got stuck in our fantasy of what the other person should be like. However, we set ourselves the goal of doing some very difficult tasks together,” said Pinkett Smith, clarifying that they love each other very much and are trying to find what works for them, yet they are divorced and live separate lives, although not with documents.
Now they may be trying, but by the time Will slapped Chris Rock on Oscars night, the split seemed final. She also spoke about that moment, as rarely before, saying:
“I thought it was a skit, like many people who saw the incident on TV.” I thought, ‘There’s no way Will is doing this’ There was no way, until he got back in the chair and I knew it wasn’t a joke. The first words I said to him were, ‘Are you okay?'”
In March 2021, for those of you who may have forgotten, Will Smith suddenly rose from his seat after a joke by host Chris Rock at the Oscars, in which the comedian made fun of Jada’s hairstyle (which in at that time you had shaved your head). Saying the words, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth,” Will punched Chris, making the moment viral worldwide and one of the most infamous events ever to happen in Hollywood.
Maybe that moment served for the couple to try again to save the marriage, however the fact is that they have been secretly separated for almost 7 years and even today, they continue to live independent lives.
