Dick Van Dyke was involved in a car accident in Malibu after losing control of his car.
According to TMZ, police responded to calls about the 97-year-old actor’s accident, whose car crashed into a gate.
Dyke lost control of his car after it skidded off the road in heavy rain in Los Angeles, and according to the same reports, the Hollywood “legend” was found bleeding from the nose and mouth after the crash.
This adventure ended happily for the veteran actor, who emerged from the accident with minor injuries. He was given first aid by doctors at the scene of the accident without needing to go to the hospital.
After the rumors circulated, authorities clarified that drugs and alcohol were not involved in the case and that police have filed the necessary paperwork to request a retake of Dyke’s driving test. They cited his age as one of the reasons for the application.
How, therefore, can the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor continue to be so active in his later years? Van Dyke gives his wife, Arlene Silver, credit, according to a recent interview.
There is a 46-year age difference between the husband and wife because Silver is 51. To some people, that might sound a little unusual, but the couple is incredibly happy together, and Van Dyke claimed his youthfulness was due in part to his marriage to someone much younger.
Van Dyke was asked what his secret is, replying:
“Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me — that works! My positive attitude, I get that from my wife.”
The actor also credited “genes” and a healthy fitness routine for keeping him going: “I still go to the gym three days a week and work out. And I advise everybody to do that because that’s what ages people — it’s just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer.”
Above all else, it’s clear that his marriage to Silver has given him a new lease on life.
“We share an attitude,” Van Dyke explains. “She can go with the flow. She loves to sing and dance, which we do almost every day. She’s just delightful.”
“He is the most perfect human being,” Silver, meanwhile, said of her husband.
“I’ve never met anyone so happy, so genuine, so amazing. He’s just like a happy pill.”
Van Dyke had previously been in two long-term marriages. From 1948 until their divorce in 1984, he was married to Margerie Willett, with whom he had four children. Michelle Triola Marvin and he were together from 1976 until her passing in 2009.
2012 saw the union of Van Dyke and Silver, who were then both 40 years old. Van Dyke was first apprehensive about the reaction of the audience to their age difference.
“I thought there would be an outcry about a gold digger marrying an old man,” he mentioned, “but no one ever took that attitude.”
