Most everyone loves their children with an indescribable amount of love. However, it’s not unusual to need a break. Parents may find themselves unable to go out or take a vacation until well into their journey as parents. As a result, people go a little over the top in celebration, often throwing their inhibitions to the wind. In one such case, a mom taking a dream holiday fell while enjoying her Long Island Iced Tea and ended up in critical condition.
Dream Holiday Takes a Turn
Kylee Enwright is a 48-year-old mom of 3. She was recently on a dream holiday with her husband to Thailand. The pair from Singleton in Hunter Valley, Australia’s “original wine country“, was on the first day of their dream holiday. However, an emergency occurred. In a video, Kylee can be seen stepping down, and what appears to be a large gap between where she is and the ground to where she’s trying to get. They checked into their Khao Lak hotel. Like anyone needing to blow off steam, the pair began sipping cocktails shortly after, on May 28th.
Dream Holiday Turns into Nightmare
Kylee set out in search of a restroom before the couple prepared for a last-minute massage and then dinner. When Kylee hit the ground, she hit her head, falling, just over 1 and 1/2 feet. She suffered immediate brain trauma and was knocked unconscious. Bleeding from her head and ears, she would require a 6-hour surgery to remove “the left side of her skull“. Post-surgery, she was induced into a coma. She was in the same state of being when her children flew out to be with her.
Paul, Kylee’s husband, has been posting updates regarding his wife’s condition and luckily, she seems to be making progress.
“She’s got no skull on one side of her head, so one small movement the wrong way and we could be right back where we started the first time,” Paul disclosed to their local news station. “You can see the pain in her eyes, you can see the frustration.”
He also explained that he thinks Kylee mistook the space between the wooden deck and where she was standing, as a possible couple of steps. “However, there were no steps, and as she stepped off the deck her body dropped into nothingness, with the full momentum of her body sending her face-first into the pavement below,” he said.
Making Progress
Although she and her husband weren’t able to enjoy their dream holiday together, Kylee has been doing well enough to continue treatment in her own country. Almost a month after she was initially admitted to the hospital, she was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle on Saturday night, June 17th, 2023, on Thai Airways. Mr. Enwright recently shared that, “The biggest improvement she’s had is her breathing tube has been taken out,” which means that she’s been “getting better”. He further explained a bit more about her condition disclosing that the damage is “all around the outer edge.” He also shared that he believes that to be good news. “We took that as a good sign, but I’m no doctor.” Paul shared.
Facing a Controversy
When someone looks over the bar tab from the day, it may not be a wonder that Kylee found herself in this predicament on their dream holiday. After all, their bar tab reflects 9 Long Island Iced Teas and 14 beers. However, Paul Enwright has speculated that drinks they didn’t order, were added to their tab. Furthermore, because the bar tab reflects such many drinks, their travel insurance won’t cover the medical expenses because of an “alcohol clause” in the policy. As a result, Kylee’s more than $200,000 medical expenses will need to be out of pocket. Therefore, a family friend started a GoFundMe page, which has nearly reached the total $250,000 goal.
Enveloped in Support
Another recent update shows that she’s made good progress with her brain capacity because the hospital restrained her so she wouldn’t be able to harm herself. However, she was trying to free herself using problem-solving techniques. “That was an encouraging sign. She’s quite alert and awake, she just can’t communicate,” he said. Kylee will have to have another surgery in 3-4 months, in which doctors will place a 3D-printed titanium implant where Kylee’s skull used to be. And Mr. Enwright has expressed sincere gratitude for all the support from their friends, family, and community. He gave thanks “from the bottom of my heart”.
Although it’s important to let loose now and then, it’s also important to use some diligence. Particularly when out on vacation in another country because traveling can cause some complications, especially in an emergency. Some things to keep in mind regarding safety during a dream holiday include:
Taking Precautions
Travel in a pair or with a group. Kylee was alone when she fell, but even trips to the bathroom can require a buddy system, particularly when drinks are involved.
Wear flats. Although Kylee appears to be barefoot, there’s no question she took a dangerous spill, one that could have been even more damaging, had she had on high heels or wedged sandals.
Check your policy. Having travel insurance for your dream holiday can be advantageous, but there are always loopholes. It’s important to know exactly what your policy covers or excludes.
Pay Attention. Although alcohol does impair people’s brain function, including depth perception and decision-making, it’s every adult’s obligation to themselves and others to drink responsibly. That means be aware of your surroundings, making well-thought-out decisions, and always watching your step.
Check-in. Ultimately, Kylee was accompanied by her husband, who could help handle the emergency. However, most countries have Embassies from other countries so upon arrival it’s a good idea to check in with them. That way they’ll be aware of your presence and can help make arrangements, in case of an emergency. Furthermore, stay in contact with people back home, even once a day to check-in.
