Mom Branded a “Monster” for Lasering Her Baby’s Birthmark — But She Says It Saved His Life
A mother from Australia’s Gold Coast faced cruel criticism online after revealing that she chose laser treatment for her baby son’s facial birthmark. While many strangers accused her of being a “monster,” the mother insists she made the difficult decision to protect her child’s health.
Brooke gave birth to her son, Kingsley, after what she described as a fairly normal pregnancy. But shortly after his birth, doctors noticed something unusual on the newborn’s face. What first appeared to be a simple mark was later diagnosed as a port-wine stain, a type of vascular birthmark caused by abnormal blood vessels under the skin.
The birthmark covered a large portion of the left side of Kingsley’s face. At first, Brooke didn’t think much about it. However, doctors soon explained that the condition could become more serious over time. In some cases, port-wine stains are linked to health complications such as glaucoma, seizures, or a rare neurological condition called Sturge-Weber syndrome.
Learning about the potential risks was terrifying for the new mother.
Doctors warned that the birthmark could darken, thicken, and even affect her son’s vision if left untreated. Because the mark was close to his eye and forehead, specialists recommended starting laser therapy early, when treatment tends to be most effective.
Despite the medical advice, the decision was incredibly difficult.
Laser treatment for port-wine stains can be painful, especially for a baby. Brooke recalled how heartbreaking it was to watch her tiny son cry during the procedure. The treatment itself lasted only about two minutes, but for the mother, it felt much longer.
“It’s only two minutes, but it’s two minutes of hell,” she later said when describing the emotional experience.
After beginning to share her son’s journey on social media, Brooke hoped to raise awareness about the condition. Instead, she was shocked by the wave of negative reactions that followed.
Some people accused her of putting her child through unnecessary pain simply for cosmetic reasons. Others went even further, calling her a terrible mother and labeling her a “monster.”
The harsh comments deeply hurt Brooke, especially because they misunderstood her intentions. She explained that the procedure was recommended by doctors and aimed at preventing future health problems—not simply changing her son’s appearance.
“I would never put my kids through something that isn’t medically needed,” she said.
Over time, the treatment began to show results. After just one laser session, Kingsley’s birthmark became noticeably lighter. While his journey isn’t over and more treatments may be needed, Brooke says she feels confident she made the right choice.
Today, she focuses on raising awareness about port-wine stains and helping other parents understand the condition. Despite the online criticism, she says the support from many other families has been overwhelming.
For Brooke, the most important thing is ensuring that her son grows up healthy and confident.
“I want him to be proud of who he is,” she said.
And although strangers on the internet were quick to judge, this mother says she will always choose what she believes is best for her child.
