For 68-year-old Barb Ewers, the day she finished chemotherapy was already going to be one she would never forget.

After facing breast cancer for the second time, Barb was finally at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital for her final treatment. Nurses were there to celebrate with her as she prepared to ring the bell marking the end of her chemotherapy.

But Barb had no idea that someone very special had traveled through the night just to be there.

Her 19-year-old granddaughter, Faith Dyer, is a member of the U.S. Air Force and is stationed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. When Faith realized she might miss her grandmother’s final treatment, she asked for last-minute time off.

She expected she might be told no.

Instead, her request was approved.

Faith immediately got into her car and began the seven-hour drive to Ohio.

She drove through the night, knowing she could be exhausted when she arrived. At one point, she even considered pulling over to sleep.

But she made a simple choice.

She chose to keep going because she wanted to see her grandmother.

When Faith finally arrived at the hospital, she quietly waited in the corner, still wearing her Air Force uniform.

Barb walked down the hallway, completely unaware.

The nurses welcomed her to her final treatment.

Then someone pointed toward the corner.

Barb looked over.

And there stood Faith.

For a moment, Barb appeared completely stunned. Then she realized who was standing in front of her.

The two embraced, and Barb immediately began to cry.

Faith had been away from her family while Barb was going through her second battle with breast cancer. Barb had first been diagnosed in 2012 and later went into remission. The cancer returned in 2025, and this second treatment journey had been especially difficult.

For Faith, being so far away had been difficult too.

“It’s hard not being there for my family and supporting them through it,” she explained.

So when she finally had the opportunity to be there for one of the biggest moments of her grandmother’s journey, she didn’t hesitate.

She drove seven hours through the night.

And she made it.

The emotional reunion was captured on video and shared on TikTok, where it quickly attracted attention from viewers who were touched by the bond between the grandmother and granddaughter. The story was subsequently featured by major U.S. outlets, including PEOPLE and Fox News.

For Barb, the surprise meant far more than simply having her granddaughter at the hospital.

She said the effort made her feel deeply loved and special.

And perhaps that is what made the moment resonate with so many people.

After a difficult journey through cancer treatment, Barb wasn’t walking into her final chemotherapy appointment alone.
