Country music star Toby Keith has announced that he has been battling stomach cancer since the fall and has been undergoing treatment for the past six months.
“Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I have spent the last 6 months receiving chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to catch my breath, recover and relax,” he told fans in a statement posted on Instagram and Twitter on Sunday (June 12).
Keith, 60, ended his statement by saying he was looking forward to spending time with his family, but admitted he would “see the fans as soon as possible”.
“I can’t wait”, he wrote.
Keith’s famous friends, singers and country music fans flooded the comments with prayers and well wishes.
Keith has been on tour for his new album and is scheduled to perform in Illinois and Michigan on June 17 and 18, though no announcements have been made regarding schedule changes or cancellations.
The “I Love This Bar” singer founded the Toby Keith Foundation in 2006 to provide support for children battling cancer.
Eight years later, his foundation opened “a no-cost, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment,” according to its website.
“There is no greater gift than keeping families strong and united during a difficult time. If we can relieve stress in a family, encourage a sibling and comfort a sick child, then we will make a difference in the fight against cancer,” the foundation’s website states.
