Triangle of Sadness actress Charlbi Dean Kriek – died of a sudden illness in August. She was 32 years old.
At that time, the disease was not detected.
A spokesman for the New York City chief medical examiner’s office confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday that she died of bacterial sepsis.
Sepsis “was a complication of asplenia (absence of a spleen) due to “trauma to her torso,” the spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
The death of the South African actress was ruled an accident.
Her bacterial sepsis was caused after she became infected with a bacteria known as Capnocytophaga. While the infection is rare, there are different types of Capnocytophaga that thrive in the mouths of people and are also present in the mouths of dogs and cats, according to the CDC. People with autoimmune problems and without a spleen are especially susceptible.
It is not clear whether an animal bite or lick was responsible for the model’s infections as the medical examiner has not released her full autopsy.
