A Child’s Heartfelt Wishlist for His New Family Will Break Yours
In Oklahoma, a young boy endured unimaginable hardship at the hands of his biological parents. Years of neglect and mistreatment finally ended when he was removed from their care and placed with an adoptive family. On his very first day in their home, he handed them a handwritten note — a simple list that speaks volumes.
Child abuse can take many forms — from neglect and emotional harm to physical violence and exploitation. It’s the deliberate or careless actions of a caregiver that cause deep wounds, both visible and invisible.
Dreamcatchers for Abused Children, a registered non-profit organization, works to raise awareness, educate the public, and connect victims with the help they need to heal. Recently, they shared the story of this boy, whose parents struggled with severe alcoholism and offered him no stability, love, or care.
A concerned neighbor, sensing something was wrong, alerted authorities. Soon after, police and child protection services intervened, ensuring the boy’s safety. Through Dreamcatchers, a safe and loving home was finally found for him.
When his adoptive parents welcomed him, the boy handed them a note titled: “Things I Want in My Family.” His wishes were heartbreakingly basic — things most children take for granted:
“Things I want in my family:
I want food and water.
Don’t hit on me.
A house with running water and lights.
I want love.
Mom and Dad don’t fight.
I want no drugs.
Please don’t kill my pets.
Help with school.
Nice clean clothes.
No lice. No bug in the house.
Clean house.
Clean the bed with covers.
Don’t sell my toys.
Treated fairly.
Don’t get drunk.
Tv in the house.
Let me keep my school stuff.
Nice shoes.
My comb soap. Nice house and safe and a heater coat.
Toothbrush.”
