Johnny Depp has won a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he sued for domestic abuse.
The jury ruled this Wednesday in favor of Johnny Depp, justifying his stance that Heard fabricated allegations that she was abused by Depp before and during their brief marriage.
The decision could help the star rehabilitate his image, at least that’s his hope, after a televised trial that turned into a spectacle of a vicious marriage.
Depp sued Heard in defamation in Fairfax District Court in connection with a December 2018 article she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” His lawyers said he had been slandered by the article even though he never mentioned his name.
Heard reacted disappointed with the decision:
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. The mountain of evidence I had was not enough to withstand the power and influence of my ex-husband.
I am even more disappointed with the message this decision conveys to other women. It is a step backwards, when a talking woman was ashamed. I’m sorry I lost this issue. “But I am even sadder that I lost the right that I thought I had as an American, to speak freely and openly.”
While Deep, in a statement after the decision recalled that “six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of people closest to me, and the lives of people who for many, many years have supported and trusted me in me, they have changed forever.
